You can request to change your name and/or gender
with the GP Practice that you are registered with.
Your GP Records is part of something called the NHS
Spine, which is an IT infrastructure for health and
social care in England.
This means that your GP Practice aren't able to simply
change your name and/or gender on your record
immediately. They will request for your record to be
changed with Primary Care Support England (PCSE).
Following the correct process will ensure that your
records are up-to-date and your continued care.
You do not need to have been to a Gender Identity
Clinic, taken any hormones, undergone any surgery,
or have a Gender Recognition Certificate in order to
change your gender.
When you change your gender, you are given a new
NHS number and registered as a new patient at the
practice. All previous medical information relating to
you will be transferred into a newly created medical
record.
This is not reversible. To revert back to your original
gender, you would receive a third NHS number.
